Zithromax belongs to a group of antibiotics called Macrolides which interrupts the protein synthesis of the disease causing bacteria.

Zithromax is an antibiotic medication that needs to be taken for a stipulated period of time for it to be effective. Do not discontinue dosage suddenly without speaking to your doctor. Also, do not take the medication for a prolonged time period.

Do not take antacids containing aluminum or magnesium for at least 2 hours post using Zithromax.

Try to take the medication at the same time everyday to avoid missing a dose. If you have missed a dose and it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosage. Alternatively, if you remember immediately, then you may take the missed dose. Never double up to compensate for a missed dose.


Store Zithromax at room temperature in a cool and dark place. Keep away from children and pets.

Safety Information/ Warning Precautions
Speak about your medical history to your healthcare provider.
Mention complete and accurate details about existing medical conditions, known allergies to food or drugs, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements or OTC medications that you may be using.
Do not use Zithromax if:
You are allergic to it or other similar antibiotics
You got liver disease or jaundice after taking azithromycin in the past
You are allergic to macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), or to ketolide antibiotics (eg, telithromycin)
Maintain caution while using Zithromax if:
You have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever, or hives
You have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to
You liver or kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, or abnormal heart rhythms.
Maintain caution if you use the following drugs:
Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
Chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), or tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline)
Please be informed:
Zithromax may cause dizziness, blurred vision or drowsiness during early stages of therapy. If you experience any such side effects, avoid any tasks that require you to be mentally alert. For example, driving, swimming, handling heavy machinery etc. These effects may be enhanced in people who use alcoholic beverages.
Some patients experience mild diarrhea while using antibiotics. This is common and may not necessarily need medical treatment. However, symptoms like bloody or tarry stools should not be ignored.
Infrequent or unmonitored use of Zithromax may cause a severe relapse of the disease which may be difficult to treat. So, always follow the instructions of your health care provider and never self medicate.
Ciprofloxacin may cause you to get sunburned easily. Avoid exposure to the sun, using tanning beds etc. If you experience a severe rash after sun exposure, seek medical assistance.
Zithromax may weaken your immune system so avoid contact with people who have contagious infections.
Elders may be more prone to the side effects of Zithromax.
If you are pregnant, then you must contact your doctor to speak about using Zithromax. There may be risks or benefits that you need to be aware of. Zithromax is found in breast milk. Do not breast feed while using Zithromax.

Side Effects
Mild side effects are commonly experienced while using Zithromax. They do not need medical treatment and usually subside on their own. Some examples are Diarrhea; headache; loose stools; nausea; stomach pain; upset stomach; vomiting.
If these side effects become bothersome or do not fade away after a while, then seek medical assistance.
Serious side effects that need immediate medical assistance are rare.
Some of them are severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); bloody stools; changes in hearing or hearing loss; chest pain; eye or vision problems; irregular heartbeat; muscle weakness; pounding in the chest; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; seizure; severe diarrhea; stomach cramps/pain; trouble speaking or swallowing; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
