Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline group of antibiotics that works by interfering with the production of the bacterial cell wall. It may also be used with other antibiotics to treat severe infections caused due to mites.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic medication that needs to be taken for a stipulated period of time for it to be effective. Do not discontinue dosage suddenly without speaking to your doctor. Also, do not take the medication for a prolonged time period.

Try to take the medication at the same time everyday to avoid missing a dose. If you have missed a dose and it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosage. Alternatively, if you remember immediately, then you may take the missed dose. Never double up to compensate for a missed dose.


Store Doxycycline at room temperature in a cool and dark place. Keep away from children and pets.

Mention complete and accurate details about existing medical conditions, known allergies to food or drugs, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements or OTC medications that you may be using.
Do not use Doxycycline if:
You are allergic to it or other similar antibiotics
If you are pregnant
You have infectious mononucleosis (mono).
Maintain caution while using Doxycycline if:
You have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever, or hives
You have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to
You have kidney problems
You have asthma or sulfite allergy
You have a history of increased pressure inside your skull
You use seizure medicines
Maintain caution if you use the following drugs:
Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
Chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), or tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline)
Live oral typhoid vaccine or hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills)
Please be informed:
Doxycycline may cause dizziness, blurred vision or drowsiness during early stages of therapy. If you experience any such side effects, avoid any tasks that require you to be mentally alert. For example, driving, swimming, handling heavy machinery etc. These effects may be enhanced in people who use alcoholic beverages.
Some patients experience mild diarrhea while using antibiotics. This is common and may not necessarily need medical treatment. However, symptoms like bloody or tarry stools should not be ignored.
Infrequent or unmonitored use of Doxycycline may cause a severe relapse of the disease which may be difficult to treat. So, always follow the instructions of your health care provider and never self medicate.
It may cause you to get sunburned easily. Avoid exposure to the sun, using tanning beds etc. If you experience a severe rash after sun exposure, seek medical assistance.
Brown, yellow, or gray tooth discoloration may happen while using Doxycycline. The chances of this occurring are higher in children less than 8 years of age.
If you are pregnant, then you must contact your doctor to speak about using Doxycycline. There may be risks or benefits that you need to be aware of. Doxycycline is found in breast milk. Do not breast feed while using Doxycycline.

Side Effects
Mild side effects are commonly experienced while using Doxycycline. They do not need medical treatment and usually subside on their own. Some examples are Diarrhea; nausea; vomiting, sensitivity to sunlight.
If these side effects become bothersome or do not fade away after a while, then seek medical assistance.
Serious side effects that need immediate medical assistance are rare.
Some of them are severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; confusion; dark urine; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe diarrhea; stomach pain or cramps; unusual bruising or bleeding; vaginal discharge or irritation; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
