Lexapro belongs to a category of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It alters the level of certain chemicals in the brain.

Usage

& Dosage

Please ask for precise dosage instructions to your healthcare provider.

You must continue to take Lexapro for the entire dosage schedule. If you suddenly discontinue therapy, then it may cause problems like mental or mood changes, numbness or tingling of the skin, dizziness, confusion, headache, trouble sleeping, or unusual tiredness.

Try to take the medication at the same time everyday to avoid missing a dose. If you have missed a dose and it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosage. Alternatively, if you remember immediately, then you may take the missed dose. Never double up to compensate for a missed dose.

Storage

Store Lexapro at room temperature in a cool and dark place. Keep away from children and pets.

Avoid tasks that require mental alertness like driving, handling heavy vehicles etc.
Alcohol and other sleep aids are strictly prohibited. Ask your healthcare provider about any medications that may contain sleep aids.

If you or someone you know is under the age of 21 and using Lexapro then he/she may need close monitoring during therapy. If you notice changes in behavior with symptoms like depression, mood swings, anxiety, restlessness or irritation, then it must be promptly reported to the doctor.
Although rare, Lexapro has been associated with a condition called Priapism in which the person experiences a painful prolonged erection. Contact your doctor immediately if this occurs.
If you are using MAOIs or Triptans or other similar drugs, it may increase your risk of Serotonin syndrome. Some of the symptoms of this condition are gitation; confusion; hallucinations; coma; fever; fast or irregular heartbeat; tremor; excessive sweating; and nausea.
In extremely rare cases, it may cause a potentially fatal condition called Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Some symptoms of this condition are fever; stiff muscles; confusion; abnormal thinking; fast or irregular heartbeat; and sweating. Contact your doctor immediately if this occurs.
Lexapro may cause your blood sugar level to fluctuate. Some symptoms of a sudden spike in blood sugar levels are drowsyness, thirst and confusion. Some patients notice a fruity breath odour. If you notice any of these symptoms then speak to your healthcare provider immediately.
