Cipro belongs to a category of medications called fluoroquinolones. It works by restricting the formation of the bacterial cell wall which allows the immune system to kill the bacteria.

& Dosage

Ciprofloxacin cannot be used with dairy products like Milk or Yoghurt.

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic medication that needs to be taken for a stipulated period of time for it to be effective. Do not discontinue dosage suddenly without speaking to your doctor. Also, do not take the medication for a prolonged time period.

Try to take the medication at the same time everyday to avoid missing a dose. If you have missed a dose and it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosage. Alternatively, if you remember immediately, then you may take the missed dose. Never double up to compensate for a missed dose.


Storage

Store Ciprofloxacin at room temperature in a cool and dark place. Keep away from children and pets.

Safety Information/ Warning Precautions
Speak about your medical history to your healthcare provider.
Mention complete and accurate details about existing medical conditions, known allergies to food or drugs, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements or OTC medications that you may be using.
Do not use Ciprofloxacin if:
You are allergic to it or other similar antibiotics
You are using tizanidine
You have a muscle disorder (myasthenia gravis)
Maintain caution while using Ciprofloxacin if:
You have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever, or hives
You have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to
You have kidney problems
You have a tendon problem
You have seizures or epilepsy
You have suffered a brain or head injury in the past
You have diabetes
You have gonorrhea
You have symptoms like sudden pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, stiffness which may indicate a tendon rupture
Maintain caution if you use the following drugs:
Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
Probenecid
Blood thinner medications
Chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), or tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline)
Methotrexate
Carfarate
Vitamin or mineral supplements that contain calcium, iron, or zinc
Antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum
Please be informed:
Ciprofloxacin may cause dizziness, blurred vision or drowsiness during early stages of therapy. If you experience any such side effects, avoid any tasks that require you to be mentally alert. For example, driving, swimming, handling heavy machinery etc. These effects may be enhanced in people who use alcoholic beverages.
Some patients experience mild diarrhea while using antibiotics. This is common and may not necessarily need medical treatment. However, symptoms like bloody or tarry stools should not be ignored.
Infrequent or unmonitored use of Ciprofloxacin may cause a severe relapse of the disease which may be difficult to treat. So, always follow the instructions of your health care provider and never self medicate.
Ciprofloxacin may cause you to get sunburned easily. Avoid exposure to the sun, using tanning beds etc. If you experience a severe rash after sun exposure, seek medical assistance.
Ciprofloxacin may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control methods. It is recommended that you use multiple forms of birth control or use a barrier method like a condom.
Brown, yellow, or gray tooth discoloration may happen temporarily while using Ciprofloxacin. The condition is treatable using tooth cleaning.
If you are pregnant, then you must contact your doctor to speak about using Ciprofloxacin. There may be risks or benefits that you need to be aware of. Ciprofloxacin is found in breast milk. Do not breast feed while using Ciprofloxacin.

Side Effects
Mild side effects are commonly experienced while using Ciprofloxacin. They do not need medical treatment and usually subside on their own. Some examples are Diarrhea; nausea; vomiting.
If these side effects become bothersome or do not fade away after a while, then seek medical assistance.
Serious side effects that need immediate medical assistance are rare.
Some of them are severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; confusion; dark urine; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe diarrhea; stomach pain or cramps; unusual bruising or bleeding; vaginal discharge or irritation; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
